Local context
A municipality with two faces
The name says it all: since 2017 the municipality has officially been Calonge i Sant Antoni. The medieval village and its castle sit about four kilometres inland from the bay of Palamós; down by the sea, Sant Antoni, Treumal and the coves live off holidays, and in summer the population nearly doubles. A coastal business works mostly for visitors; one in the village serves residents and day-trippers coming up from the beach.
Since 2021 the old village has also been a book town: seven bookshops opened at once to make Calonge Catalonia's first booktown, and within a year an eighth had been announced. That brings a particular visitor, a weekend reader who searches Google for somewhere nearby to eat, stay or shop.
